The Wizard of OZ

San Sisto College students took a journey over the rainbow and into the land of Oz in this year's college production of The Wizard of Oz, performed in August. Students from Years 7 to 12 introduced audiences to Munchkins, Ozians and Winkies, as well as apple-throwing trees, poisoned poppies, jitterbugs and flying monkeys.

Students, with the support of parents and staff, prepared all through Term Two to create a performance that rivalled professional companies in its quality and workmanship! With a cast of nearly 100, it was a challenging task, but a very rewarding result. The choreography, created by Helen Ekundayo, was drawn from many different dance styles, including ballet, tap, jazz, soft shoe shuffle and jive. And the lead actors, drawn mostly from the Senior pool, were extremely proficient in their delivery of American accents and comical characters.

Barbra Toparis took on the iconic role of Dorothy, and was very capably supported by Brie Burley as The Scarecrow, Georgia Shaw as The Tinman and Elisha Hiscock as The Cowardly Lion. Special mention must also be made of Georgia Briggs as The Wicked Witch, Elissa Cotroneo as Glinda the Good Witch, Kimaya Piazetta-Charlton as Uncle Henry, Lillian Dowdell as The Ozian Guard, Samuelle Simbag as The Mayor of Munchkin Town, and introducing Lauren Dolan as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

The sets and costumes were also spectacular: the sets were purchased from Mt Maria College with some of the costumes hired from by Our Lady’s College and the rest created by the wonderful parents and staff of San Sisto College. The support from parents and carers was incredible and an amazing testament to the spirit of community that permeates everything we do at San Sisto.
