Kokoda
Challenge 2026 was an extraordinary test of character, preparation, resilience,
and support, pushing our 53 staff and student participants well beyond their
comfort zones. Across the gruelling trek, students encouraged one another with
humour, kindness, determination, and care, drawing inspiration from the
endurance of the Diggers on the original Kokoda Trail. Only three participants
withdrew after bravely battling pain and injury, and every person involved
should feel immensely proud of what they achieved.
We are deeply
grateful to our families, support crews, and incredible teachers for making the
experience possible. This year, staff and students walked in loving memory of
Jocelyn Mollee, Lorielle Russell, and Jack Thatcher, carrying their families in
their hearts. As Ruth Russell so beautifully shared, “Walk strong. Walk
gently.” - words that capture Kokoda’s call to move with strength, compassion,
remembrance, gratitude, connection, and love.
Our biggest
thanks to organiser, Mr Ben Wittkopp, Mrs Michelle Harris, Mr Steve Brennan,
Mrs Emily Sill, Ms Ellie Balev, Ms Gemma Hurst, Ms Talia Di Pino, Ms Roma
Tedeschi, and Mr Andy Bertram. Special mention of our dear friend and former
teacher at SSC, Ms Amanda Chippendale, who joined us, to Mr Matthew Hunt,
father of Year 12's Lara, who stepped in at a very late stage, and past pupil
(2025 Captain and Dux) Ms Celeste Harris who mentored her San Sisters through
the journey! This is the most amazing community!
